War Zone to Buffer Zone to Peace
Park
Transforming the Demilitarized Zone into a Peace Park-- the 2.4
mile strip that has been separating the North Korean army from the
South Korean and U.S. armies for 48 years--obviously will require
a formal peace. But there are hopeful signs that the two Koreas
can achieve reconciliation, and it is time to begin planning for
the environmental protection of the 372-square mile tract.
This conference, its third, focused on steps toward peace.
John Brademas, President Emeritus, New York University, Congressman
from Indiana, 1959-1981: There are more Koreans at NYU than students
from any other foreign country, and Wagner Graduate School of Public
Service has an exchange program with Korean universities.
Today is the 48th anniversary of the Korean War armistice that established
the Demilitarized Zone and closed it off from human encroachment.
